In 2024, 6.6 percent of employed people aged 20 to 64 in the EU worked long hours, defined as usually spending 49 hours or more weekly in their main job. This share of workers with long hours has decreased over time, down from 9.8 percent in 2014 and 8.4 percent in 2019.

In a very emotional atmosphere, the Municipality of Paralimni - Derynia celebrated on August 09 the unveiling of the statues of the heroic martyrs Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomos, at the monumental site under construction in Nikos Psara Street, in Paralimni.

Population

The population in the government-controlled area of Cyprus is estimated at 966,400 at the end of 2023, compared to 949,100 at the end of 2022, recording an increase of 1,8 percent.

The proportion of children aged less than 15 years was estimated at 15, percent three percent while the proportion of persons aged 65 and over increased to 17,7 percent in 2023, compared to 22,3 percent and 11,3 percent respectively in 2000.  There was therefore a gradual increase in the proportion of old-aged persons and a decrease in the proportion of children, demonstrating the ageing process of the population.

In 2023, the unemployment rate for 15-74 years old in the EU fell to 6.1 percent of the labour force, the lowest level since 2014.

After a record year with more than 22.000 participants, the European Statistics Competition will be held for the eighth consecutive time, by the European Statistical System (ESS), consisting of the Statistical Offices of the Member States of the European Union and the European Statistical Service (Eurostat).
