The first of this year’s issue of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer indicates that rising rates of vaccination, combined with easing of travel restrictions due to increased cross-border coordination and protocols, have all helped release pent up demand.

COVID-19 has had a devastating impact in countries around the world on the tourism industry, local economies, and jobs. Tourist destinations across the globe were forced to close up shop as travel bans and lockdowns left visitor numbers plummeting. 

During the summer and early fall period of this year, the partners from Cyprus, Greece and Malta have been collecting data and monitoring the behaviour of key stakeholders from their pilot samples of tourist establishments, based on the requirements of the project titled ‘Reducing the Consumption and Disposal of Single-use Plastics in the Tourism Industry in Cyprus, Greece and Malta’, also known as ‘SUPMed’.

The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Giannis Karousos, participated in the Informal Council of Ministers of Transport and Energy of the European Union that took place in Slovenia from September 21-23.
