The Unveiling of the Statues of Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomos

In a very emotional atmosphere, the Municipality of Paralimni - Derynia celebrated on August 09 the unveiling of the statues of the heroic martyrs Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomos, at the monumental site under construction in Nikos Psara Street, in Paralimni.

The unveiling ceremony was performed by Anita Demetriou, speaker, of the House of Representatives, Cyprus, who referred to the need for the state to make every possible effort to justify the sacrifice of the two heroic martyrs.

The Mayor of Paralimniu - Dherynia, George Nicolettos, in his address expressed his thanks to the Municipal Council and the Municipal Service, who acted with sensitivity and determination so that, in a minimum of time, to achieve the licensing, the notice, the award of the bid and the construction of the first phase of the memorial site. He said that the completion of the project will continue with the full landscaping of the site.

At the same time, he thanked the Monuments Committee for the licensing, as well as the sculptor Philip Yapanis, who - bearing, as he noted, the wounds of his 38-day captivity in Attila's dungeons - managed to capture with his artistic ethos the heroism of the two martyrs in their bronze figures.

The mayor also expressed his thanks to the Dias Group and Sigma TV, which contributed significantly to the funding of the memorial through a TV fundraiser organised after the 1996 tragedy, as well as to the Isaac-Solomos Memorial Initiative, which he described as a pure group of thousands of people who carry the debt of the sacrifice of Tasos and Solomos to the whole world".

Nicolettos expressed special thanks to Tasos Isaac's mother, Tasoula, his daughter, Anastasia, his father, Spyros Solomos, and their families for their patience for 29 years until the completion of the monument.

During the event, speeches were also given by the daughter of Tasos Isaac, Anastasia Isaac, the nephew of Solomos Solomos, Angelos Kyriakou, representative of the Isaac-Solomos Memorial Initiative, as well as the sculptor Philip Yapanis.

The event was attended by the deputy minister of tourism, Kostas Koumi and the deputy minister of migration and international protection, Nicolas Ioannidis, among others.

The evening was accompanied by songs and video projections of the Isaac-Solomos Memorial Initiative's march, while thousands of its members were present, honouring the memory of the heroic martyrs.
