The impetus for the organisation of the two-day celebrations in Ayia Napa was given by the historical event documented by professor and historian Vassilis Sfiroeras and also professor and historian George Georgis that the only battle that took place in Cyprus during its years Of the Greek Revolution, took place in Ayia Napa on March 17, 1826, between about 200 Greek revolutionaries who disembarked from 20 Greek ships and became involved in a battle against the Turkish Guards of Ayia Napa and the Turkish Guard of Famagusta.
The battle ended victoriously in favor of the Greek revolutionaries and this historic event is mentioned in written reports of the Dutch Consul in Cyprus to the gGovernment of his country at that time.
The celebrations were coordinated by the cultural service of the Municipality of Ayia Napa.
