A statement was given by the Republic of Cyprus on the outcome of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (ΙΜΟ-MEPC75), November 16-20 of this year.

Cyprus welcomes the approval of the draft new mandatory regulations to reduce carbon intensity of ships.

This is a step forward and a building block towards the implementation of IMO initial strategy for the decarbonisation of shipping. The draft amendments of MARPOL Annex VI, which are scheduled for formal adoption in June 2021, relate to mandatory goal-based technical and operational measures to reduce carbon intensity, including a review clause for the evaluation of the measures in the near future.

Cyprus encourages the examination of proposals put forward for the creation of research and development mechanisms, to expedite the research, innovation and supports the discussion of initiatives towards the development of low and zero carbon technologies for use by the shipping industry.

As governments come together at the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) to consider important next steps to decarbonise maritime transport, the global shipping industry urgently calls on them to take forward its proposal for an industry-financed, USD5 billion research and development (R&D) programme, to catalyse the transformation of the industry from dependence on fossil fuels to operating with zero-carbon energy sources.
